The inspiration behind our Scarabesque Rings
The scarab beetle was an icon of ancient Egyptian adornment. Scarab rings were among the most popular amulets, because the beetle was associated with the sun god as a symbol of rebirth. Having observed the beetles rolling oversized balls of food along the ground toward their burrows, ancient Egyptians believed that there was also a giant scarab beetle that moved the sun across the sky from east to west each day.
Â
The earliest scarab amulets - worn for protection and good luck - appeared around 2000 BCE and remained popular for thousands of years, all the way into Greek and Roman times.
Â
Since I approach jewelry through the lens of art history, marrying ancient themes with modern aesthetics is a core principle of my work.Â
Â
I'm always interested in finding a fresh, abstracted approach to a well-worn representational form, and I will often take traditional iconography and try to identify the essential elements of shape, form, and movement, paring away the rest. Here the essentials are the golden glow of 22 karat, the choice of stones similar to those used at that time, and the dimensions of those stones resembling the shape of scarab carvings.
Â
The Scarabesque Rings are a fresh twist on tradition, holding ancient power and intentional symbolism within an abstract aesthetic.
Â
It’s like a gentle nod from the future toward the past.
